DESIGNING ECONOMICAL + SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS
In June 2017, Co-Founders Tony Tan & Nir Nikolaevsky decided to tackle one of Australia’s biggest environmental problems - plastic pollution. The idea was founded during Nir’s time working in the deli section at his local supermarket. Over the period of 5 years, Nir witnessed over a tonne of plastic cling wrap being used just once, and then sent off to land fill, where it would either end up in our oceans or live on for hundreds of years. Learning this, Nir decided something had to be done. After extensive research and product testing, the team discovered a product that would solve the problem, while also remaining cost effective… The Sustainable Silicone Lid. This is how Silfresh was born.
OF PLASTIC ELIMINATED
An important step in creating an economic and sustainable packaging product was working directly with the leaders in the food industry. That’s why, when designing our range of environmentally friendly packaging, we consulted Australia’s largest supermarket chain, Woolworths. First, we identified the impact we could have on Woolworths Sustainability Metrics. By replacing the cling wrap in their deli section with our sustainable silicone lids, not only could we divert 200 TONNES of plastic waste from landfill and oceans, but we could also save them $2M per year.
A good idea needed to be tested with the help of some early adopters - Dumplings Plus chain restaurant partnered with Silfresh to test our prototypes in their stores. As a result, Silfresh took them one step closer to being plastic free by 2025, providing a silicone alternative that remained competitive with the original price of the cling wrap they used before.
